New ways to arrest phagosome maturation

Although all 'professional' phagocytes have evolved to engulf large particles for degradation in the acidic, hydrolytic environment of the phagolysosome, the primary goal of this process differs markedly between cell lineages. For example, tissue macrophages need to be highly degradative and immunologically silent when removing tissue debris.
