Post-translational modifications such as ubiquitination, which alter the activity and turnover of proteins during different biological processes, have rightly been in the scientific spotlight for some time. In their recent paper published in Molecular Cell, Nijman et al. draw attention to the related issue of how removal of these modifications is regulated.
