Abstract
Communication between neurons occurs through highly specialized junctions called synapses. Synapses consist of the presynaptic cell, which releases neurotransmitter into the synaptic cleft, and the postsynaptic cell, which contains receptors that bind the neurotransmitter and initiate cellular responses.
