Sliding doors: clathrin-coated pits or caveolae?

It has long been appreciated that endocytosis regulates the activity of signalling receptors at the cell surface, as signalling is often turned off by receptor internalization and subsequent degradation in lysosomes (downregulation). In addition, evidence now shows that some receptors also signal from endosomes — a compartmentalization that may modulate the signal, and hence the biological response.
