Abstract
α-Herpesviruses, such as herpes simplex virus, the cause of coldsores, have an unusual life cycle within their chosen hosts. These viruses infect a primary epithelial site within a host, such as the skin around the mouth, and then move into the cell body of the neuron innervating this area.
