Drowning by numbers
Abstract
As in any profession, researchers are assessed on the merit of their contributions at every step of their careers, and these evaluations influence funding, job opportunities, promotions, and peer recognition. Scientists are painfully aware of the importance of these evaluation systems, the fairness and operation of which are consequently very important.
