Cav1 is associated with both flat caveolar domains and Cav1 scaffolds11 as well as invaginated smooth plasmalemmal vesicles or caveolae. PTRF (cavin-1) and SDPR (cavin-2) are required for caveolae invagination and SRBC (cavin-3) for caveolae budding to form caveolar vesicles. Overexpression of SDPR induces enlarged caveolae and caveolar tubules, defining critical roles for cavin family members in caveolae formation, morphology and dynamics.
