Abstract
Twenty years ago, spontaneously transformed mouse cells were shown to overexpress murine double minute gene (mdm2), a finding that led to further studies examining the role of the MDM2 protein in tumorigenesis. Today, MDM2 is regarded as a critical oncoprotein that regulates expression and activity of tumour-suppressor proteins, such as the gatekeeper of the genome, p53 (Refs 1, 2).
