Abstract
On the origin of autophagosomes A report from Ktistakis and colleagues suggests that autophagosomes — double-membraned vesicles that engulf cytoplasmic content and deliver it to lysosomes for degradation during autophagy — may derive from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER; J. Cell Biol. 182, 685–701) The autophagosomal membrane has been proposed to arise either from the ER, through de novo lipid synthesis or transport.
