Steroid hormone receptors are transcription factors that regulate transcription in an exquisite manner. In the absence of ligand, hormone receptors either remain inactive in the cytoplasm or repress promoter activity through the recruitment of co-repressors, including histone deacetylase enzymes (HDACs).
