The need for innovation in biomanufacturing

Innovations in the biomanufacturing industry are traditionally incremental in nature (refinement of existing technology), but occasional disruptive inventions (exploiting novel technology or knowledge) can drive rapid and adaptive change. Such inventions are being driven by evolution in the regulatory (e.g., the advent of pathways for biosimilars in the United States and Europe) and business (e.g., outsourcing to reduce costs) environments. In this context, the introduction of disruptive biomanufacturing technologies may provide companies with a competitive edge, allowing early adaptors to focus on factors beyond cost, such as process efficiency, flexibility and convenience during manufacturing. In the following article, we discuss three main areas where we anticipate innovations will have a lasting and game-changing impact on biomanufacturing.
