David Bentley has been appointed chief scientist at Solexa (Hayward, CA, USA and Cambridge, UK). He joins the company from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, where he held the position of head of human genetics. As a founding member of the institute's management team, Dr. Bentley was a key contributor to the Human Genome Project, the SNP Consortium, and most recently, the International Haplotype Mapping Project.

Dr. Bentley has served on Solexa's scientific advisory board since 1998, and was a co-inventor of aspects of the company's technology. In his new role, Dr. Bentley will head Solexa's DNA sequencing applications development and projects, including the scheduled commercialization later this year of a fast and economical whole human genome resequencing system.

KAI Pharmaceuticals (S. San Francisco, CA, USA) has appointed Gregory Bell as vice president of clinical R&D and chief medical officer. Previously, Dr. Bell served as vice president of clinical development and clinical operations at Abgenix.

Early-stage company Ensemble Discovery Corp. (Cambridge, MA, USA) has named Jean-Jacques Bienaime to its board of directors. Mr. Bienaime is currently CEO of BioMarin Pharmaceuticals, and was previously chairman, CEO and president of Genencor International.

Avanir Pharmaceuticals (San Diego, CA, USA) has named Eric Brandt president, CEO and a member of the board of directors. Mr. Brandt was previously executive vice president, finance and technical operations, and CFO of Allergan.

John Brown has joined Cambridge Antibody Technology (Cambridge, UK) as a nonexecutive director. Previously, Dr. Brown served as finance director and then CEO of Acambis.

Physiomics (Oxford, UK), a systems biology simulation company, has appointed David Evans as nonexecutive chairman, succeeding Stephen Parker. Mr. Evans previously served as managing director of Shield Diagnostics and, following its merger, as deputy managing director of Axis-Shield. He has held directorships in various companies including Acolyte Biomedica, Chromogenex and Eurodiagnostica.

Kalypsys (San Diego, CA, USA) has named Paul Grint chief medical officer and head of development. Dr. Grint was most recently senior vice president and chief medical officer of Zephyr Sciences, and he has held similar positions at Pfizer, IDEC Pharmaceuticals and Schering-Plough.

Scientific software provider Accelrys (San Diego, CA, USA) has announced the appointment of Mathew Hahn, most recently general manager of its SciTegic subsidiary, as the company's chief science and technology officer. Dr. Hahn previously led several product development efforts for Molecular Simulations, and in 1999, cofounded SciTegic, which Accelrys subsequently acquired in September 2004.

NextGen Sciences (Huntingdon, UK and Philadelphia, PA, USA) has announced the appointment of James Heffernan as CEO. Dr. Heffernan joins NextGen Sciences from Upstate Ltd., where he held the position of managing director, Europe. Previously, he held senior executive positions with Sigma- Aldrich and Promega.

Hennie Hoogenboom has been appointed chief scientific officer at Ablynx (Ghent, Belgium). During his 20-year career, he has led numerous research initiatives involving the discovery of recombinant antibodies and other proteins for therapy in the fields of oncology and inflammation. Dr. Hoogenboom's past positions include senior vice president at Dyax, founder of Target Quest and associate professor at the University of Maastricht.

Medisyn Technologies (Minnetonka, MN, USA) has named Thomas D. Ingolia as CEO. Dr. Ingolia spent 13 years at Eli Lilly, beginning as a research scientist and moving up the management ranks to CEO of Sphinx Pharmaceuticals, an acquisition that he targeted, evaluated and managed for Lilly. Since then he has held senior management positions at Ontogeny, Microbia and most recently Prolexys, where he served as CEO.

University of Chicago medical ethicist Leon R. Kass, who was named 4 years ago to lead the newly created President's Council on Bioethics, has stepped down as chairman as of October 1. He cited a heavy workload in his decision to relinquish leadership of the 18-member council, though he will continue to serve as a member. To succeed Dr. Kass as chairman, the White House has selected Edmund Pellegrino, professor emeritus of medicine and medical ethics at Georgetown University Medical Center and a former president of Catholic University.

Dennis H. Langer has been elected to the board of directors of Sirna Therapeutics (San Francisco, CA, USA). Dr. Langer is currently managing partner of Phoenix IP Ventures, and was previously president of Dr. Reddy's Laboratories' North American operations. He has also held executive positions at GlaxoSmithKline, SmithKline Beecham and Neose Technologies.

David Onions has been named to the newly created position of chief medical officer at Invitrogen (Carlsbad, CA, USA), with responsibility for guiding the company's scientific efforts as it moves into areas more closely associated with medical research and closer to patients, such as stem cell technologies, diagnostics support and other clinical studies. Dr. Onions joined Invitrogen in 2003. He was a founder and director of Q-One Biotech, which was acquired by Invitrogen through its purchase of BioReliance. Most recently, he served as chief scientific officer for BioReliance.

Alexion Pharmaceuticals (Cheshire, CT, USA) has appointed Vikas Sinha as senior vice president and chief financial officer. Mr. Sinha was most recently vice president and chief financial officer of Bayer Pharmaceuticals, which he joined in 1994.
