<![CDATA[Location: Long Island National Wildlife Refuge Complex – stationed at Target Rock National Wildlife Refuge (NWR), Huntington, NY

The Long Island NWR Complex, headquartered in Shirley, NY, encompasses nine units, totaling nearly 6,500 acres. The primary purpose for each unit is to benefit fish, wildlife, plants and their habitats. These nine units protect many of the Island’s habitat types critical to migratory birds, endangered species and other wildlife. Long Island’s strategic location—situated in the Long Island Pine Barrens and along the Atlantic Flyway—provides important nesting, wintering and migratory stop-over areas for hundreds of bird species. Each unit is unique in wildlife species, habitat and management programs.

Target Rock NWR, an 80-acre refuge, is a mixed upland forest consisting of mature oak-hickory, ½ mile of rocky beach, brackish pond, and several vernal pools. Once a grand estate with formal gardens, the refuge is home to a variety of songbirds, mammals, shorebirds, fish, reptiles and amphibians. Located on the north shore of Long Island, the refuge is about 25 miles east of New York City (NYC). Oyster Bay NWR, a 3,204-acre refuge, is unique and the largest in the Refuge Complex. It serves as a marine refuge comprising of waters and marshes of Oyster Bay and Cold Spring harbors. In addition, the refuge consists of a freshwater pond and surrounding upland habitats. Located on the north shore of Long Island, the refuge is about 20 miles east of NYC. Seatuck NWR, a 196-acre refuge, consists mainly of mixed-oak woodlands, red maple stands, grasslands, brush, and salt marsh habitats. Pine barren habitat and freshwater wetlands and ponds are also present. The coastal setting provides habitat for many migratory birds. Located in the south shore of Long Island, the refuge is 3 miles from Fire Island National Seashore by ferry.

Duties: Interns will work with Refuge staff on the early detection-rapid response invasive species project at Target Rock, Oyster Bay, and Seatuck NWRs. This internship will provide individuals the opportunity to develop invasive species management skills, particularly with identification, mapping and control. Primary duties include invasive species surveys and mapping infestations using Global Positioning System (GPS) and Geographical Information System (GIS), and control and monitor invasive plants using a variety of mechanical and chemical techniques with a focus on priority species such as water chestnut, Japanese stiltgrass, Chinese silvergrass and black swallow-wort. Secondary duties include conducting piping plover and least tern surveys, public outreach activities, beach cleanups, and maintaining trails and visitor facilities. The intern will have the opportunity to participate in other ongoing refuge management activities as well as visitor services programs. The intern will work 5 days a week, including weekends, for a total of 40 hours/week with minimal supervision. Shifts will be limited to 8 hours per day, but must be flexible, sometimes beginning at 6 am and sometimes ending at 8 pm. A government vehicle is provided for work tasks and a valid driver’s license is required.

Position Dates: Start: Mid-May; Ending: Mid-August (Approximately 12 weeks). Start and end dates are flexible.

Qualifications:
A. Required Background: A recent graduate or current student (Junior or Senior status preferred) in wildlife biology or ecology, environmental biology, general biology, natural resources management, or related field; good oral and written communication skills; enthusiastic about field work and interest in working with invasive plants; desire to work with people; must have good observational skills, and a valid driver's license.
B. Desired Background: Experience working with plants or background in botany, or general biology; familiarity with GPS and ArcGIS software; ability to record detailed field observations in field notebook and experience collecting biological data.

Training: On-the-job-training provided by biologists in plant identification and invasive species control techniques.

Salary and Housing: Stipend $246/week plus free housing

How to Apply: Interested applicants should send a cover letter and resume via mail or email to

Morton NWR, a 187-acre peninsula, boasts exceptionally diverse habitats. Sandy and rocky beaches fringe the peninsula, while wooded bluffs overlook the bays. Morton NWR consists of upland forest, ponds, salt marshes, beach, a lagoon and grasslands. These habitats provide for a variety of wildlife including close to 300 species of birds including least terns, osprey and the federally threatened piping plover. The project will be related to mitochondrial remnants and deal with anaerobic parasites/protists and skills in anaerobic microbiology are desirable. <![CDATA[THE DEPARTMENT OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERING AT UNIVERSITAT ROVIRA I VIRGILI, TARRAGONA, CATALONIA, SPAIN

Invites applications and nominations for two or more tenure track faculty positions at lecturer level (profesor lector, equivalent to Assistant professor) for Fall 2010 or Spring 2011. Exceptional candidates will be considered for the Associate Professor rank (profesor agregado). Candidates are expected to contribute to one of two research focus areas: Heterogeneous Catalysis and Transport Phenomena. However, research applications will be considered for all the areas of activity of the Department that include, apart from all the areas of Chemical Engineering, Food Technology and Environmental Technology. A PhD with a distinguished academic record in Chemical Engineering or related disciplines is required. Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in the Chemical Engineering undergraduate curriculum and in the Chemical and Process Engineering Masters program; developing and leading externally funded scholarly research program; contributing to the Department’s and University’s “third mission” (activity in technology transfer and societal outreach); participating in the Department’s management.
Ranked as the top public university in Spain for research excellence and the
second best for overall performance according to a combined teaching and research indicator (http://www.elpais.com/static/portadas/mapa/universidad.html) the Universitat Rovira i Virgili is the visionary center of the International Campus of Excellence of Southern Catalonia with campuses in five cities in the region. The science and technology campus is located in the city of Tarragona, a world heritage site on the Mediterranean coast. The Department of Chemical Engineering is a leading department in teaching innovation and research excellence and provides interdisciplinary research opportunities together with the other 22 departments of the university, the Catalan Technological Center for Sustainable Chemistry and the Catalan Renewable Resources Institute located nearby. The Department will offer an attractive starting package depending on qualifications and personal professional development plans.

Interested individuals should send the following application materials to the Chairman, Department of Chemical Engineering: curriculum vitae, a statement of teaching and research objectives, and the names and contact details of three references. Application materials should be sent in electronic form to ikatakis@etseq.urv.es (pdf or word files). Screening of applications will begin February 1, 2010 and will continue until positions are filled. Spanish and Catalan laws dictate hiring through a national accreditation system.

Information can be found in "www.etseq.urv.cat/DEQ":http://www.etseq.urv.cat/DEQ. Pre-selected candidates will be guided through the process by the department. European law dictates that an EU work permit be obtained before hiring but there are no nationality restrictions for hiring and the department will guide candidates through immigration procedures should it be necessary. Excellent reading, writing, and communication skills in English are a requirement. Spanish and/or Catalan knowledge is desirable but not a requirement at the moment of hiring (special provisions are made by the department for non native speakers to attain required levels of language competence at later stages of their career). Women and young graduates are strongly encouraged to apply.
