The main purpose of this role is to be responsible for maximising the growth, quality, usage and financial performance of the journals, by formulating and implementing commissioning and product development plans and achieving the journals’ KPIs.  As Managing Editor you will actively promote the journals within the relevant scientific communities in order to attract the highest quality work, as well as recruiting and managing external Associate Editors.

Day to day activities
•	Staff management responsibilities as required.
•	To develop and implement three-year product development plans in association with the Publisher and Editorial Board.
•	To develop the best authorship and readership for the journals.
•	To develop and lead the implementation of the journals’ commissioning plans.
•	To commission articles and to work with the Senior Publishing Editor in order to grow, improve, develop and maximise the quality of the journals.
•	Define and implement the journal scope and Editorial Policy in collaboration with Editorial Board(s).
•	To develop the Editorial and Advisory Boards and Scientific/Associate Editors.
•	To support and monitor the manuscript processing and promotional activities of any Associate Editors, in collaboration with the Senior Publishing Editor.
•	To liaise with Marketing over the development and implementation of marketing plans.
•	Preparation of annual budgets and forecasts with the Publisher.

Essential skills and qualifications
•	Good honours degree in science (chemical science preferable).
•	Significant experience in STM journal publishing, including editorial acquisition, commissioning, sound understanding of peer review, and marketing.
•	Up-to-date knowledge of and passion for the chemical sciences.
•	Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
•	Proven ability to lead a team.
•	Good organisational and time management skills, with the ability to work under pressure and to meet deadlines.
•	Willingness to travel extensively, nationally and internationally.

Desirable skills and qualifications
•	Previous experience with Editorial Boards.
•	Contact with the relevant communities.

Postdoctoral Scientist

Dr Alexander Betz. The project focuses on the modulation of immune responses using inducible lineage factors introduced by retroviral vectors and the development of alternative delivery methods. 

You should have a PhD in a biological subject (or be due to complete doctoral studies within 3 months of applying). You should also have research experience in immunology, molecular biology, biochemistry or a related subject. Ideally, you will have previous experience with T cell lineage commitment and experimental modulation of immune responses. Experience in protein purification would also be of advantage. 

You will be awarded a three year MRC Career Development Fellowship, which is a training and development position for a postdoctoral scientist who has recently completed her or his doctoral studies or is moving into a new research discipline.

Plasma membrane ryanodine receptors in pancreatic beta cells


Applications are invited for a postdoctoral post funded by the Medical Research Council for up to 3 years from early 2010. The lab combines a variety of approaches to examine the structural basis of intracellular Ca2+ signalling (Nature 458, 655). You must have, or soon expect to have a PhD. You will also have experience with pancreatic beta cells, patch-clamp recording and/or optical imaging methods. You will employ these methods to analyses of the roles of plasma membrane ryanodine receptors in the physiology of pancreatic beta cells (J. Biol. Chem. 284, 5186). Prior experience with these techniques, or a willingness and ability to learn them, is essential.

We are recruiting an ambitious graduate student who has, or is expecting to get, a very strong first degree in a relevant subject to join the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research (www.cimr.cam.ac.uk ) in the Department of Medical Genetics.  

This is a 4-year PhD position funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) and is an Industrial Collaborative studentship (CASE award) with Lilly UK as the industrial partner.

You will work mainly in the lab of Professor David Rubinsztein with an opportunity to spend a minimum of 3 months at Lilly UK, Erl Wood Research Laboratories to gain experience in both academic and industrial research. Recent publications from the Rubinsztein lab include: Williams et al (2008) Nature Chemical Biology 4: 295-305, Sarkar et al. (2007) Nature Chemical Biology 3, 331-338, Rubinsztein (2006) Nature 443:780-786. Ravikumar et al. (2005) Nature Genetics 37:771-776.

You will identify novel ways of regulating autophagy in the brain and investigate their relevance in the context of neurodegenerative diseases. The studies will involve the use of various cellular, molecular and viral approaches performed in models of neurodegeneration.  

The position will commence in October 2010. The full studentship fees and a stipend at the current BBSRC rate, with supplements from the industrial partner, is available to UK or EU students who have been resident in the UK for at least three years. Other EU participants may receive a fees only award.

Europe's top cancer charity, Cancer Research UK, has combined with the University of Cambridge to create the world class Cambridge Research Institute (CRI) situated on the Addenbrooke's Biomedical Campus in Cambridge.

The Institute's research ranges from basic cancer biology through translational research to clinical application. The Institute currently houses 300 researchers and contains brand new state-of-the-art research facilities.

The molecular imaging group aims to develop disease-specific markers for detection and treatment of cancer. The CRI has a well equipped imaging unit with PET, CT, MRI, and bioluminescent imaging, as well as first class core facilities for genomics, histology and microscopy. The Department of Radiology has some of the best imaging equipment available for human imaging.

The successful candidate will be employed on a number of projects including the development of imaging approaches with hyperpolarized carbon-13 MRI as well as new PET tracers.

You should have a degree in biomedical, life or physical sciences, and/or experience in basic biochemical and cell culture techniques. Experience of working in the area invivo imaging would be desirable. You will have a degree of professional autonomy and responsibility, will be part of a well-qualified multi-disciplinary team and will perform research with help and guidance.

The MRC Mitochondrial Biology Unit (Director: Professor Sir John Walker ) wishes to appoint a Group Leader (Programme Leader Track Scientist) to carry out a programme of research aimed at furthering our understanding of mitochondrial diseases involving mitochondrial dysfunction, and on developing interventions based on the new knowledge coming from his/her research and that of colleagues in the Unit.  This is a new programme which will focus on the clinical implications in the general area of mitochondrial biogenesis.

Candidates should have an MD and/or PhD and will have completed a period of postdoctoral training or equivalent and have a record of or show outstanding potential for independent research. The successful candidate will lead a small team and research funding will be available.

The position is permanent and the starting salary will be in the region of
£44,014 - £48,692 per annum, depending on qualifications and experience.

*International PhD Programme 2010*

The *MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB)* is one of the birthplaces of modern molecular biology. It continues to be a prolific source of new ideas, discoveries and inventions, establishing its reputation as a leading international research centre with 14 associated Nobel Prizes and numerous other prestigious scientific awards.

The *LMB* provides an opportunity to do cutting-edge research for 20-30 new graduate students from universities all over the world. Graduate students register for their PhD with the *University of Cambridge* and belong to one of its Colleges.

*Areas of study include:*

• Structures of biological "machines" by X-ray crystallography and cryo-EM
• Computational biology
• Biology of immunity and cancer
• Intercellular signalling, membrane trafficking and advanced optical microscopy of live cells
• Genetic analysis of behaviour
• Genetic, optical and electrophysiological analysis of neural circuits
• Molecular origins of neurodegenerative diseases
• Synthetic biology

*Funding:*

The following competitively awarded 3-year studentships are available for PhDs commencing in October 2010:

• Up to 12 *MRC Studentships* available for UK and European Union graduates
• Up to 6 *LMB Cambridge Scholarships* for graduates from Commonwealth, European Union and overseas countries, funded in collaboration with the Cambridge Trusts
• 1 *César Milstein Studentship* for Argentinian Nationals tenable in PNAC Division, in collaboration with the Darwin Trust of Edinburgh

UK applicants - 6 January 2010

Milstein Studentship (Argentinian Nationals only) - 31 March 2010

Next Generation Fellowships</b>

The Centre for Trophoblast Research aims to promote the study of placental biology, with special reference to the Trophoblast.  The Centre is offering two Next Generation Fellowships commencing in October 2010.

Candidates should normally be within 5 years of the award of their PhD and display evidence of a strong research record with an ability to perform independent research.  A Fellowship may be tenable for one or more years at a time, renewable up to a maximum of five years. Fellowship holders are expected to apply for a Senior Research Fellowship from a research council or medical charity during the course of their tenure.

Each Fellowship will provide flexible funding of up to £50,000 per annum, inclusive of a personal salary, research consumables, equipment and conference travel.

The scheme is open to UK, EU and Overseas PhD graduates.
