Apoptosis is a highly regulated process of cell deletion and plays a fundamental role in tissue homeostasis. The removal of apoptotic cell debris by macrophages is termed programmed cell clearance and plays a crucial role in the resolution of inflammation. The current project will utilize in vitro systems and in vivo (mouse) models of relevant human diseases to study the role of macrophage engulfment of apoptotic cells in chronic inflammation and autoimmune disease. Improved understanding of the fundamental signaling pathways involved in programmed cell clearance will aid in the development of novel therapeutic interventions in chronic inflammation and autoimmune conditions.

The successful applicant will work at the Division of Molecular Toxicology (Head: Bengt Fadeel) at the Institute of Environmental Medicine at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden. He/She will study the molecular signaling underlying apoptotic cell recognition and engulfment by macrophages and will establish animal models for assessment of the in vivo significance of these signaling pathways in disease. The project is funded by the Swedish Research Council and also involves international collaborations with a number of other institutions, e.g. molecular genetic studies of cell clearance in the model organism, Caenorhabditis elegans.

We are looking for highly motivated candidates with a PhD degree in cell biology or immunology or equivalent field of research and a strong interest in apoptosis and cell signaling. Experience with the following techniques is preferred: small animal (mouse) models, primary cell cultures and co-cultures, cell death (apoptosis) assays, confocal and light microscopy, flow cytometry. Excellent communication skills and an ability to interact socially and scientifically with other post docs and students in the laboratory are essential. Previous post doc experience and a strong publication record is preferred.

Karolinska Institutet defines a post doc as an individual who holds a PhD degree awarded within the last five years; in exceptional cases, this five-year period can be extended by one year owing to circumstances such as parental leave, clinical internship, illness or military service.

The position is for 2 years.

Please send your application, marked with reference number 5637/2009 including the following documents:
• CV including date of public thesis defense and previous positions
• complete list of publications
• short statement of research interests (maximum 1 page)
• signed letters of reference from at least two references (mandatory)

Karolinska Institutet is one of the leading medical universities in Europe. Through research and education, Karolinska Institutet contributes to improving human health. Each year, the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet awards the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

A post-doctoral fellowship is available at the Institut de Science et d'Ingénierie Supramoléculaires (ISIS, Strasbourg, France) in the new Laboratory of Cell Physics. The project is financially supported by the Institute.

Subject : The researcher will study cell motility in a simplified assay. Cells without nuclei will be prepared and their motility will be promoted by an appropriate selection of substrate topography and chemical pattern. We anticipate that cell fragments will exhibit a directed motion with a minimal number of contacts imposed by the modified substrates. The motion directions and velocities will be modeled in collaboration with Physical Biology groups. In addition, the contribution of GTPases will be dissected by monitoring their levels of expression. Other topics at the Interface between Physics and Biology are also open for studying the cytokinetic ring contraction and cell monolayer dynamics.

The Laboratory : The Institute of Science and Supramolecular Engineering (ISIS) is a recent Institute at the University of Strasbourg. It is dedicated to develop interdisciplinary research between Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Located in a key city for European Institutions, the Center attracts scientists from all over the world.

Profile: The applicant should have a PhD in experimental physics, chemical engineering or cell biology, and show interest for interdisciplinary work at the Interface between Physics, Biology and Biochemistry.

Applications will be discarded or, if the applicant so wishes, returned two years after the position has been filled. Documents sent electronically should be in MS Word or PDF format.

Your complete application, marked with *reference number 312-1019-09*, should be sent to jobb@umu.se or to the Registrar, Umeå University, SE-901 87 Umeå, Sweden to arrive December 15, 2009 at the latest.

The Nordic EMBL Partnership for Molecular Medicine was established in 2007 as a joint venture between the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and the Universities of Helsinki, Finland, Oslo, Norway and Umeå, Sweden and involves building of national sister institutions in the three countries. The partnership between EMBL, the Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM, www.fimm.fi), the Centre for Molecular Medicine Norway (NCMM, www.ncmm.uio.no) and the Laboratory for Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden (MIMS, www.mims.se) is dedicated to the growing field of life sciences that investigates the molecular basis of disease and explores molecular and genetically based treatments. Aiming to combine complementary strengths in the Nordic EMBL Partnership each partner brings in a unique set of expertise, skills, and facilities encompassing EMBL’s recognized research strengths in the areas of molecular, cellular and developmental biology, bioinformatics and structural biology complemented by Norway’s expertise in molecular mechanisms of disease, Sweden’s focus on microbial pathogenicity and molecular infection medicine and Finland’s strength in human genomics and medical systems biology which equip the partners to tackle some of the most challenging problems of biomedicine. The Partnership provides access to scientific infrastructure, including databases, facilities and instrumentation, as well as to clinical materials and networks and training activities provided by the partners and adopts the EMBL model for international recruitment, staff turnover and scientific reviews.

The Nordic EMBL Partnership is now seeking outstanding international candidates for the positions of:
