Description
I. Goal: Grow the Quantity and Quality of Research performed by the Faculty of the College of Medicine
A. Increase Direct and Indirect external research funding
B. Increase the number of faculty in the most prestigious national/international research societies
C. Increase the number of faculty on NIH study sections
II. Methods
A. Direct Responsibility
1. Allocate research space, budgeted start-up, bridge, and salary funding, and support for core facilities and programs based on best data on current, and best judgment of future, research productivity
2. Work with Department Chairs, Center Directors, other colleges, and the Vice President for Research to build interdisciplinary research programs which are synergistic
a) E.g. Work with the CCTS Director to assure research growth and eventual CTSA status
b) Work with the Director and Department Chairs to assure success of the Vermont Cancer Center
3. Develop alternative sources of research funding such as foundations, corporations and government
4. Supervise construction of new research space e.g. Colchester and Given Courtyard and Backfill
5. Assure that all tenure track hires are aligned with the research priorities of the College of Medicine
6. Supervise graduate (MS/PhD) education for the College of Medicine
B. Direct Reports
1. Technology Transfer
2. Physical Plant
3. College of Medicine Center Directors not reporting to the Provost or a Department Chair
C. Shared Responsibility
1. Advise the Dean on all research budgets and investments
2. Work with the Principle Business Officer to assure that spending on start-up, bridge, and salary stay within budget
3. Work with the Associate Dean for Diversity to assure recruitment and retention of the most diverse scientists and staff possible
4. Collaborate with the Associate Dean for Faculty and Staff Development to assure that junior tenure track faculty have good mentorship determined prior to hire and that this mentorship continues after hire
5. Collaborate with Department Chairs and the Associate Dean for Faculty Development to assure that there is an annual evaluation of the research productivity of all tenure and research track faculty which is as objective as possible, is part of the faculty member’s annual review, and is shared with the faculty member
6. Collaborate with the individuals responsible for PhD Education to assure that such programs are aligned with the research priorities of the college and that such students are assigned to well qualified investigators
7. Collaborate with the UVM Veterinarian to assure that the research needs of the faculty of the College of Medicine are met and that the faculty of the College of Medicine cooperates in the maintenance of certification of the Laboratory Animal Facility
