The Alberta Cancer Board is the provincial agency responsible for cancer treatment, research, care, prevention and early detection. The Division of Population Health and Information at the Alberta Cancer Board is seeking a team-oriented Biostatistician in a full time position in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. This core-funded, permanent position offers an excellent opportunity to develop an independent biostatistical research program relevant to cancer control in a multidisciplinary environment with a minimum 50% of protected research time. In addition, the successful candidate will collaborate with Division epidemiologists on externally-funded research projects and mentor statistical associates.

A dynamic and stimulating environment, the Division currently has a team of nationally and internationally recognized Research Scientists together with a core group of experienced research staff, engaged in population-based cancer research including etiology, biostatistics, molecular epidemiology, cancer screening and health services. As part of this team, the successful candidate could also collaborate with other researchers, including those in the Southern Alberta Cancer Research Institute (www.sacri.ucalgary.ca), and will have an adjunct appointment at the University of Calgary at an academic level commensurate with experience.

The Province of Alberta has made a major investment in cancer through a $500 million endowment for cancer research, prevention and screening complementing the long term endowment funding provided by the Alberta Cancer Foundation. Planning is also underway for an innovative, state of the art cancer control campus in Calgary.

Primary Responsibilities:
• Conduct investigator-initiated research in biostatistics relevant to cancer control;
• Collaborate with Division epidemiologists in developing appropriate statistical methods and analytic approaches for externally-funded research studies;
• Provide direction to the statistical support staff comprised of a PhD-trained staff biostatistician (to be hired), three MSc-trained biostatisticians, database and data collection programmers and assist with their development;
• Participate in undergraduate medical and graduate education and supervise graduate students in biostatistics as desired;
• Serve on scientific and ethics review boards for the Alberta Cancer Board and other scientific bodies and committees as appropriate;
• Participate in on-going strategic planning for research in the Division of Population Health and Information.

Qualifications & Experience:
• A PhD in Biostatistics or Applied Statistics with a minimum of three years in a biomedical or population health setting;
• Sound knowledge of statistical theory and methods with ability to plan and implement them in epidemiologic or medical studies;
• Demonstrated proficiency in use of advanced statistical methods and development of novel methods if appropriate;
• Experience in epidemiologic research and/or randomized controlled or intervention trials. Research expertise in longitudinal and survival data would be an asset;
• Established publication and external funding track record and/or demonstrated scholarly potential;
• Experience with mentoring and developing analytical staff will be an asset;
• Demonstrated experience working in multi-disciplinary team setting;
• Well developed leadership and collaboration skills coupled with strong priority management skills is desirable;
• Excellent oral and written communication skills;
• Strong foundation in statistical software on both Windows and Linux platforms.

Salary is based on Research productivity, but would be no less then $80K
