Description

The research group of Dr. Thomas Greb located at the Gregor Mendel Institute of Molecular Plant Biology (GMI) is seeking an enthusiastic and self-motivated individual to fill the post of a full-time research technician in the group starting in early summer 2008.

The Greb lab uses vascular tissue development in Arabidopsis as an example for cell specification and tissue formation in higher organisms. The group seeks to understand the molecular mechanisms regulating the establishment and maintenance of specific gene expression profiles in this particular tissue type. The functional dynamics of the vasculature and its fundamental role in growth provide reasons for choosing this research system.

The research technician appointed will have the opportunity to gain experience in in situ techniques like RNA hybridisations, immunolocalisation and the detection of reporter gene activity. The successful candidate will have a background in histology and microscopy. Proven experience in basic molecular biology work is also required (DNA preparation, plasmid construction, PCR, southern and northern blotting). Experience with working with plants is desirable but not essential. The ideal candidate should be willing to learn new techniques and be able to coordinate and monitor his/her own work plan. He/she will also be responsible for the day-to-day running of the laboratory, including ordering. He/she should be able to work independently as well as in a team, be well organised and prepared to work in an international environment. Good interpersonal communication and English skills are essential. This is a long-term position that is subject to a probation period.

The GMI, which is located at the Vienna Biocenter Campus, is a newly established institute owned by the Austrian Academy of Sciences. Interested candidates should send a CV, contact information for 2 referees and a cover letter to Dr. Thomas Greb by email: thomas.greb@gmi.oeaw.ac.at. (Bewerbungen sind auch in Deutsch möglich) GMI website: http://www.gmi.oeaw.ac.at/

Application deadline: 1. May 2008
