Postdoctoral Research Fellowship – Thermo-chemical Processing of Lignocellulose for Biofuel Production in Africa 2008 to 2010
Summary
Description
Position:
An opportunity for a postdoctoral researcher in the thermo-chemical processing of lignocellulose biomass for biofuel production is currently available, in particular pyrolysis and gasification. Candidates with experience in pyrolysis processes, bio-oil characterization and up-grading, combustion testing of bio-oils and/or gasification of biomass are particularly encouraged to apply. The fellowship is available for a period of three years as of 1 April 2008. A minimum amount of R180 000 per annum has been granted for the fellowship and we understand that, provided we put the necessary procedures in place, this amount will be tax-free.
Research:
This research group within which the candidate will work is currently undertaking research in the following areas:
• Optimisation of fast and vacuum pyrolysis processes for lignocellulose processing
• Chemical analysis of lignocellulose raw materials from the SADC region
• Commissioning of a pilot scale fast pyrolysis set-up
• Bio-oil characterisation and applications development e.g. combustion, electricity generation and upgrading through steam extraction
•
• Thermodynamics and kinetics of gasification of biomass
The postdoctoral researcher will be expected to contribute significantly to:
A. The publication of research outputs from current and previous projects
B. Daily supervision of postgraduate student projects
C. Performing experimental work when necessary
D. Developing new areas of research within the research group.
E. Writing new funding proposals to sustain research activities.
F. Design new experimental set-ups as required
Requirements:
A Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology or related scientific discipline obtained within the past five years, with a strong background in the thermal processing of lignocellulose. It is essential that the candidate can communicate fluently in English (oral and written) and work independently. A first degree in Chemical Engineering, allowing registration as a professional engineer in South Africa will be considered as a significant benefit.
