This position is part of a collaborative project working with a network of industry and universities and will expand work on diamond and diamond-like carbon coated cutting tools to develop smart, high efficiency machining devices. The study will involve investigations of material structure, tribology, failure modes, carbon microstructure and surface science. Additionally, knowledge of thin films, coating techniques and modelling methods would be advantageous. Applicants should have a good honours degree (first, upper second, or lower second class with MSc) in physics, chemistry, materials science or mechanical engineering, and an aptitude for practical experimental work.
