*The University of Edinburgh*

*The University of Edinburgh is an exciting, vibrant, research-led academic community offering opportunities to work with leading international academics whose visions are shaping tomorrow's world.*

*BHF 4-year PhD Programme*

*The Cellular and Molecular Basis of Cardiovascular Disease*

The University of Edinburgh, one of the UK's leading institutions for biomedical research, has established two 4-year PhD programmes in cardiovascular science sponsored by the British Heart Foundation. The next studentships will be starting in September 2010.

*BHF 4-Year PhD Programme (4 Studentships for graduates in the biomedical sciences)*

Under this studentship the first year of training involves three laboratory based projects to develop key research skills and a taught module to develop critical reading and scientific presentation. The first semester focuses on the development and basic physiology of the cardiovascular system and the second semester on the mechanisms of cardiovascular disease. Laboratory projects are drawn from current research in the Centre for Cardiovascular Science. Students can then make an informed choice of the research area and complete their PhD within the four year period.

The programme provides broad based research training in biomedical science with a focus on the molecular basis of cardiovascular disease. Excellent research facilities are available and experimental approaches include molecular genetics, cell biology, pharmacology, physiology and bioinformatics with an emphasis on the integration of these skills to provide a better understanding of the main cause of death in the UK.

The 4-year and Centre of Research Excellence Award studentships are for outstanding students wishing to pursue a career in cardiovascular research. A generous tax-free stipend (currently £18,053), research costs and tuition fees at the home/EEA rate are provided. Students with a BSc Hons (at least upper second class) or MSc in any appropriate discipline are invited to apply for the Programme. Further details, including eligibility criteria are available at http://www.cardiocore.ed.ac.uk/trainingandment

Informal enquiries should be made to Dr Matthew Bailey, Centre for Cardiovascular Science, Queen's Medical Research Institute, 47 Little France Crescent, Edinburgh EH16 4TJ. Tel: +44 (0) 131 242 6720. Fax: +44 (0) 131 242 6783. Email: matthew.bailey@ed.ac.uk

*Applications must be made in writing to Elaine Jefferies, Centre for Cardiovascular Science, Queen's Medical Research Institute, 47 Little France Crescent, Edinburgh EH16 4TJ. Email:* elaine.jefferies@ed.ac.uk
