The *Spanish National Cancer Research Center (CNIO)* is one of the foremost European cancer research centres conducting basic and applied research, including a recently established clinical programme to focus on early phase clinical trials.

There are currently 36 research groups and over 500 scientists working on a wide range of topics including the molecular, genetic and cellular bases of cancer, structural biology and biocomputing, molecular pathology, molecular cytogenetics and inherited cancer syndromes. Research groups are supported by Core Units that offer a wide range of services and cutting-edge technologies.

The publication record of the CNIO in high impact factor journals over the last four years compares well with those of highly reputed research centres such as the Salk Institute, the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory or the Netherlands Cancer Institute.

The CNIO enjoys an international atmosphere. The working language is English and about one third of its scientists, including group leaders, come from outside Spain. It has established international programmes for PhD students, postdoctoral researchers and post-resident MDs.

The *Stem Cells & Cancer Research Unit* at the CNIO, headed by Prof. Christopher Heeschen, invites applications for

*Postdocs / Staff Scientists*

The laboratory focuses on *(cancer) stem cell biology* (Urbich et al. Nat Med 2005; Zhu et al. Cancer Cell 2006; Aicher et al. Circ Res 2007; Hermann et al. Cell Stem Cell. 2007; Mueller et al. Gastroenterology 2009). The laboratory is very well funded by the CNIO, by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, by the FP7, and by a large ERC Advanced Investigator Grant.

For the Postdoc /Staff Scientist positions, we are seeking highly motivated and talented scientists to work on cancer stem cell biology. These cells have been linked to tumourigenesis, metastasis, and resistance to treatment. Evidence is accumulating for the reactivation of embryonic regulatory networks in these cells and it is now essential to understand thoroughly their regulatory machinery. Eventually, this should lead to novel therapies for their targeted elimination. The strength of our laboratory lies in combining (pre)clinical science, stem cell and molecular biology, cutting-edge technology and bioinformatics.

The successful candidates will join an international and young team of stem cell biologists.

Applicants must hold a PhD or medical degree in biology, medicine, molecular medicine

Positions are initially limited to 2 years and can be extended to 5 years. The positions are open from January 2010.

Please send your application with CV and two names of references.
