University of Southampton

National Oceanography Centre, Southampton and the Met Office Hadley Centre, Exeter

Senior Research Fellow - Atlantic Ocean circulation and climate

£34,435 - £43,622 pa

The NERC RAPID programme and its successor RAPID-WATCH, will assess the risk of rapid climate change through changes in the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (MOC) and investigate the potential for early warning of MOC changes through decadal forecasting. The programme has implemented the first sustained monitoring system for the MOC, which has been obtaining daily estimates of the MOC since 2004. The monitoring system is funded until early 2014, but a decision will be needed on whether to maintain the system after that time. A key input to this decision will be a major scientific and technical review of the observing system and its value, in autumn 2011.

The purpose of this job is to evaluate the scientific benefits of MOC monitoring, including estimating timescales on which the full benefits would be realised. This needs to include applications for: detection and attribution of unusual MOC change; reducing uncertainty in MOC projections and initialising MOC predictions. The job primarily consists of scientific research to address these questions, but you will also take a lead role in bringing together relevant information from this and related RAPID-WATCH projects in preparation for the autumn 2011 review.

You will report to Prof. Meric Srokosz, RAPID-WATCH Science Co-ordinator and Dr. Michael Vellinga of the Climate, Cyosphere and Oceans group at the Met Office Hadley Centre. Much of the evaluation is expected to be based on analysis of climate model experiments performed at the Hadley Centre and elsewhere. You will have the ability to conduct high quality scientific research, demonstrated by a PhD and need a strong understanding of climate modelling, of ocean observations and of how to bring the two together. Experience of scientific programming (e.g. in FORTRAN) and computer graphics is also essential.

This post offers the opportunity to take on a central scientific role in a high profile climate research programme. You will interact with a number of RAPID-WATCH projects based at various locations in the UK. There will also be opportunities to work with overseas colleagues and to present results at conferences and in peer reviewed papers.

The post therefore represents an excellent opportunity for you to develop your research skills, to develop a broad knowledge of ocean modelling and observations and to build contacts in a high profile area of ocean and climate research.

Dependent on your skills and preferences, you can be based either at the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton or at the Met Office Hadley Centre in Exeter. You will need to spend substantial amounts of time at the other institution.

The post is available from early 2010 and is funded for two and a half years.

General enquiries should be directed to Prof. Meric Srokosz, email: mas@noc.soton.ac.uk

To apply online visit http://www.jobs.soton.ac.uk Alternatively telephone 023 8059 2750. Please quote the reference number 3954-09-E on all correspondence. The closing date for this position is 3 December 2009 at 12 noon and it is proposed that interviews will take place on 11 or 12 January 2010.
