The Max Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics is an international research institute with approx. 500 employees, working in the field of medical genomics. A special focus lies on genome analysis of man and other organisms.

The ‘Genetic Variation, Haplotypes & Genetics of Complex Disease’ Group (Dept. Lehrach) invites applications for the following position:

*Bioinformatics / Computational Biology
(TVöD E 13) *

Major objective is the generation of haploid sequences, with a particular focus on the MHC region and haploid genomes. Approaches rely on next generation sequencing (NGS) data production and analysis, the use of fosmid libraries and advanced bioinformatics.

Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will develop programs for the integration & analysis of high-volume NGS data in the established pipeline, in particular for assembly and analysis of haplotype sequences such as MHC. In addition, he/she will be responsible for programming novel tools for the advanced analysis of genetic variation data.

Qualifications:
The ideal candidate should have
1) Ph.D. / M.Sc. in bioinformatics, molecular biology, statistical genetics or related field
2) strong programming skills in a UNIX/Linux environment (python, Java, Perl, R or C/C++) & relational databases (MySQL)
3) experience in large scale DNA sequence analyses and State-of-the-Art genetic variation analysis.

The position is open immediately until May 31, 2011, with the possibility of extension.

The Max Planck Society is committed to employing more handicapped individuals and especially encourages them to apply. The Max Planck Society seeks to increase the number of women in those areas where they are underrepresented and therefore explicitly encourages women to apply.

Applications including the usual documents and two references should be sent to
