We are looking for an NMR project leader at the PDBe who will be responsible for interfacing with the international NMR community, and for developing tools to archive, validate and analyse NMR data.

The tasks for this post include:
• to represent PDBe at relevant meetings and conferences to keep abreast of, and contribute to, new developments in the field;
• to contribute to the development of the NMR data-deposition and validation pipeline of the worldwide PDB;
• to develop software for NMR data archiving, in collaboration with and using the framework of the Collaborative Computational Project for the NMR community (CCPN);
• to analyse archived NMR data in relation to PDB coordinate data;
• to feed harvested data back to the NMR community;
• to be involved in the continued development of EuroCarbDB (http://www.eurocarbdb.org), an international portal for glycobiology and glycomics, hosted by PDEe.

Some aspects of this work are expected to result in publication of scientific articles in the peer-reviewed literature.

As a Senior Scientific Officer, the successful candidate will report directly to the Head of PDBe, Prof. G.J. Kleywegt, and will be expected to contribute actively to the writing (and reporting) of grants for PDBe to obtain funding for additional staff to work on NMR. This is an opportunity for the right person to make an impact on how the scientific community uses NMR data and structure information on biomacromolecules. Further information about the scientific aspects of this position can be obtained informally from the current NMR Project Leader, Dr. W Vranken (wim@ebi.ac.uk)

The Protein Data Bank in Europe (PDBe) Team (http://www.ebi.ac.uk/pdbe) is part of the worldwide Protein Data Bank organisation (wwPDB: http://www.wwpdb/org), which maintains the global archive of structural data on biomacromolecules. The Team also maintains a number of databases that support deposition and advanced search services for structural biologists and the wider scientific community. The Team consists of an international and inter-disciplinary mix of professionals (scientists, software engineers, and database engineers).

The PDBe Team is set up within the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) which is part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus near Cambridge, UK. The EBI is a world-leading bioinformatics centre providing biological data to the scientific community, with expertise in data storage, analysis and representation.

We are looking for a PhD, with at least 3 years post-doctoral experience in both experimental and computational NMR on biomolecules, as evidenced by relevant publications in the peer-reviewed literature. Knowledge of NMR validation procedures, programming in Python, the CCPN framework, statistical methods and relational databases is an advantage.

The post holder should be willing to travel frequently and has to be able to work independently while interacting extensively with other members of the PDBe Team and with off-site collaborators. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills as well as excellent knowledge of English are therefore required.

An initial contract of 3 years will be offered to the successful candidate. This can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of review.

EMBL is an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to an international research organisation.

Note that special visa requirements apply to employees from non EU countries working at EMBL-EBI in the UK. The period of work does not qualify for the Highly Skilled Migrants Programme.

To apply, please email a cover letter, CV (in English) and contact information of three professional references quoting ref. no. NJ/09/077/EBI in the subject line, to: applications@ebi.ac.uk
