The Cancer Research Program at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research in Sydney, Australia (www.garvan.org.au), currently has openings for research group leaders and postdoctoral scientists in the areas of breast, ovarian, prostate and pancreatic cancer. The Program provides a vibrant, multidisciplinary and interactive research environment, with major research interests in apoptosis, biomarker development, cancer genetics/genomics, cell cycle, developmental biology, epigenetics/epigenomics, invasion & metastasis, signal transduction, steroid hormone action and therapeutic development. These basic science disciplines are integrated into organ-specific translational research programs. This rich and diverse research environment will be further enhanced by the recently-funded Garvan St Vincent’s Cancer Centre (www.garvan.org.au/about-us/gsvc-cancer-centre), scheduled for completion in 2012.

We now seek dynamic individuals at all levels from immediate postdoc to Professorial level with innovative research ideas/programs that will extend and complement our current research interests and expand collaborations nationally and internationally. Expressions of interest across all scientific/medical disciplines are welcome.

Areas of specific interest include, but are not limited to, basic and translational research in: cancer genomics/epigenomics (www.icgc.org), including functional genomics, genetic screens and bioinformatics; cell biology including cell growth, proliferation, DNA damage, checkpoint control, motility and invasion, transcriptional and post-transcriptional regulation; drug resistance and experimental therapeutics; biomarkers (diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic response parameters), and therapeutic target discovery, validation and commercialization.

Appointments will be made at any level from Research Officer (1-3 years post-PhD) to Senior Principal Research Fellow (Professorial level). Remuneration will be at current University/NHMRC scales and is negotiable at the senior levels. Each appointment will be commensurate with the successful applicant’s achievements and vision. A generous initial support package will be provided, but potential research group leaders should be of sufficiently high quality to obtain competitive Fellowship and grant funding to support internationally recognized research activity.

Further information is available at www.garvan.org.au/careers. Additional enquiries should be directed to Professor Rob Sutherland, Director, Cancer Research Program & Garvan St Vincent’s Cancer Centre: r.sutherland@garvan.org.au or by telephone on +61 2 9295 8325 or +61 2 9295 8322.

Written applications, including a cover letter with a brief statement of research priorities, CV and the names of three referees, should be forwarded by 1st December 2009 and be addressed to:
