<![CDATA[*Four positions as Postdoctoral fellow in Asthma Research
Identifying and understanding asthma phenotypes*

We are hereby advertising four postdoctoral positions in asthma research, placed at the Institute of Medicine and its Krefting Research Centre. These positions are full time for two years according to "Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor". The positions are available immediately. http://www.gu.se/english/about_the_university/Job_opportunities/

The Krefting Research Centre is taking a holistic approach to asthma research, in an effort to identify and characterize different phenotypes of asthma, and to dissect the mechanism of each of these phenotypes. This is done by combining a very large population based epidemiological study with basic research methods, to really create a platform for appropriate clinically meaningful mechanistic research. The four positions are available for outstanding individuals to focus on:

1) Epidemiology of asthma, including risk factor analyses of asthma, asthma phenotypes and comorbid diseases including rhinitis.
REFERENCE NO: E 36 4273/09

2) Clinical characterization of phenotypes of asthma, by detailed clinical evaluation of asthma patients from the epidemiological cohort.
REFERENCE NO: E 36 4274/09

3) Biomarker research based on asthma phenotypes. This project will focus on analysis of the proteome in biological samples from patients with different asthma phenotypes, but may also look into alternative biomarkers such as specific RNA expression in exosomes.
REFERENCE NO: E 36 4275/09

4) Immunological characterization of phenotypes of asthma, again based on patients recruited from the epidemiological cohort. The project includes cell culture techniques and FACS of blood cells and other cellular samples from patients recruited from the cohort.
REFERENCE NO: E 36 4276/09

The Krefting Research Centre is funded by the VBG GROUP Asthma and Allergy Research Centre, by a long-term donation to Gothenburg University. The donation is originating from a donation from an industrial entrepreneur, Herman Krefting and the company he built up, the VBG-GROUP. The donation is given to research on asthma and its clinical mechanisms as well as overall management of the disease.

The projects that are funded are primarily connected to an epidemiological evaluation of 30000 random individuals in west Sweden (the West Sweden Asthma Study). The population based questionnaire database is now locked, but is currently being extended by clinical characterisation of all identified asthma patients (more than 1 700 invited) and a randomly selected sample of 2 000 subjects. The clinical evaluation is comprehensive with advanced lung function measurements, exhaled NO quantification, allergy testing, as well as extensive questionnaires and interviews. The Krefting Research Centre also has extensive resources for basic research, including FACS (FACS ARIA), cell culture, immunocytochemistry, qPCR, Bioanalyzer, proteomics and have access to the core facility including LC/MSMS, confocal microscopy and other techniques required for the projects.

*Requirements:* The positions require MD, MD/PhD or PhD degrees having been obtained within three years from the application date. Earlier examinations may be accepted under certain circumstances. A proven track record of scientific publications in per review international journals is required. For a clinical post-doctoral positions, a Medical examination within an EU country is required to obtain the right to function as a medical doctor in Sweden. Excellent knowledge in written and spoken English is a requirement. Very good knowledge in statistical methods, and appropriate methods depending on the focus of the project, are required.

*Application:* The application should be written in English and shall include:
• Cover letter including a description of experience and aims of the post-doc project
• Curriculum Vitae
• Copies of original examination certificates
• Publication list
• Names and contact details of three personal references

Send your signed hard-copy application together with examination certificates to: Registrar, Sahlgrenska Academy at University of Gothenburg, Box 400, SE-405 30 Göteborg, Sweden. The final date to reach the Registrar is NOVEMBER 30th 2009. You MUST INDICATE THE REFERENCE NUMBER both in your application as well as OUTSIDE THE ENVELOPE.
