<![CDATA[We are interested in the mechanisms underlying glucose homeostasis in the post-prandial state (Diabetologia, 2005: 48, Br. J. Pharmacol 2006, 1; J Gerontol A Biol Sci Med Sci. 2008;63:560).The project aims to understand a novel regulatory signaling network controlling insulin action at the skeletal muscle in the post-prandial state, from the molecular level up to the clinical setting. This new research area has important implications for the understanding of metabolic networks and the treatment of human metabolic syndromes, such as diabetes and obesity.
We are seeking a talented, innovative and enthusiastic researcher with a PhD awarded within the last 6 years. Highly motivated candidates with a genuine interest in metabolic regulation and genetics are encouraged to apply. Broad knowledge and adequate laboratory experience in these fields, good command of spoken and written English, and excellent communication and team skills, are required. Priority will be given to candidates with a strong expertise in the in vivo analysis of endocrine tissues development and function, glucose homeostasis, and energy balance.
The laboratory is located in a highly dynamic research environment at the Faculty of Medical Sciences in Lisbon, Portugal. Applications, including CV, list of publications, and statement of future interests should be sent to paula.macedo@fcm.unl.pt. Applicants should arrange to have two confidential letters of reference, sent directly by referees.
Funding is available for an initial period of 3 years, starting any time during the Fall of 2009 or beginning of 2010.
Deadline for the application is 15th November, 2009.

    <![CDATA[POSTDOCTORAL FELLOW – Kapahi Laboratory

http://www.buckinstitute.org/TheScience/KapahiLab/default.asp

POSITION SUMMARY:
The focus of the Kapahi Laboratory is to identify and characterize the genetic pathways that mediate effects on lifespan and metabolism. This is being achieved by using an interdisciplinary approach combining genetic, biochemical and genomic techniques in invertebrate model systems Caenorhabditis elegans and Drosophila melanogaster and human cells. In particular the lab is following their discovery that the TOR pathway and modulation of mRNA translation modulates lifespan and metabolism. We are currently combining polysomal profiling and microarrays to investigate translationally regulated genes relevant for longevity. The broader significance of this research is to help uncover the role of nutrition in the etiology of age-related human diseases like diabetes, obesity, cancer and neurodegeneration. Candidates with interest and experience with D. melanogaster, C. elegans, disease models, mRNA translational regulation and deep sequencing approaches are encouraged to apply. Additional details regarding this NIH-supported project can be found by email Pkapahi@buckinstitute.org
Receive training in specific area(s) of research with the aim of progressing towards an independent career. The appointment is up to a usual maximum of three to four years, each year contingent upon satisfactory progress, as evaluated by the supervisor/mentor.

The Buck Institute is the only independent institute in the U.S. devoted solely to research on aging and age-related diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, cancer, arthritis, diabetes, and stroke. Our mission is to increase the healthspan, the healthy years of life. Awarded a federal grant to establish interdisciplinary research in a new field called Geroscience, Buck scientists work in a unique, collaborative environment that allows scientists to initiate studies quickly and respond to new opportunities in fields such as stem cell research and regenerative medicine. The Buck has an excellent postdoctoral training program and our scientists represent a variety of complementary fields, including genetics, epigenetics, biochemistry, molecular biology, bioenergetics, age-associated disease; and technological disciplines such as genomics, proteomics, protein interaction networks and bio-informatics.

The Buck Institute, which was designed by world famous architect I.M. Pei, is located in Novato, California, 25 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge.
