Denmark — the obvious choice for high-technology research and investments

Denmark is a world leading knowledge-based society. We want to keep and consolidate this position. Moreover, the Danish Government is determined to turn Denmark into one of the world's leading high-technology countries. Denmark wants to offer even more attractive investment and job opportunities for companies or researchers involved in high-technology research and development activities. As a first step the Government has modernized the national knowledge system, which includes the universities and the grant-awarding research authorities.

Foundation for high-technology research and innovation

Recently, the Government presented its plans for a new foundation for high-technology research and innovation, with biotechnology, nanotechnology, and information and communication technology as three proposed focus areas. The foundation will be established on January 1st 2005. By 2012 the capital base will reach more than Euro 2 billion. The foundation will be an important driving force in Danish high-technology research and development and contribute towards minimizing the gap between research and innovative products.

Scholarships to highly qualified students

Denmark has 12 universities, all of which are involved in cutting-edge research collaboration with national and international partners; and all of which offer several education or degree programmes taught in English. The universities offer high quality research-based education and attract many students from abroad. However, we would like to attract even more students who can contribute to Denmark's development into one of the world's leading high-technology countries. Therefore, the Government recently introduced its scheme for scholarships to attract highly qualified students from countries outside the European Union and the European Economic Area. The scholarships will be available from 2005 and include tuition fees and an amount to compensate for cost of living.

For high-technology research or investment abroad, Denmark is the obvious choice.

  • Denmark is famous for its flexible labour market with a highly educated and efficient workforce.
  • Denmark is a safe society with low crime, good public health services and a clean environmenty—not to mention almost 7.500 km of beautiful coast line.
  • The world's oldest existing monarchy also has a rich and diverse cultural heritage — sightseeing, theatre, opera, dance, film and music.
  • A special 25% tax scheme provides favourable conditions for foreign key employees and researchers; this scheme is subject to a number of conditions and for a period of not more than 3 years.
  • Finally, and most importantly, Denmark offers world leading education as well as research and development centres within life sciences (e.g. nanotechnology and biotechnology), electronics, and information and communication technology.

University of Copenhagen launches multi-tasking research programs in biomedicine

BE A RESEARCHER IN COPENHAGEN

Establish yourself with a high-impact research group at our Faculty. Young researchers are invited to join or start new research programs Select from our International PhD programs. Take advantage of our state of- the-art core facilities, including animal facility and molecular imaging. Enjoy our exciting seminar series around the Faculty. Capitalize on your ideas of commercialization.

Call it a Danish dichotomy. The Faculty of Health Sciences recognizing the trend toward multi-disciplinary research, wanted to reorganize its biomedical research to promote interaction and teamwork. But the Faculty also wanted to preserve intelligent academic anarchy.

In order to reconcile those apparent cross purposes, the Faculty recommended integrating research functions of basic biology, clinical medicine and epidemiology/bioinformatics. Within this new researcher-driven cross-disciplinary setting, the Faculty is now launching several centres of excellence: cell biology/cancer biology, myology, immunology, molecular imaging, translational neurobiology and international health. The Faculty will pour about 35 million US$ to research clusters over the next 3–5 years. This investment will include recruitment programs and infrastructure.

The existence of each of these centers means new Faculty-level positions, more training opportunities for young scientists and improved interactions with the burgeoning pharma and biotech community in Medicon Valley, the Øresunds region which encompasses Copenhagen, Lund and Malmø.

In order to boost high quality basic research at this new entity, the Faculty is now inviting young researchers to join and build strong research groups at the University of Copenhagen. They have already established 7 strategic professorships, and are now recruiting another 5 full professors (see next page). To further strengthen the recruitment of junior researchers, they have created an opening for 7 assistant professors, (again see next page). And the support doesn't stop at the professorship level. These new positions will receive funding over three years for postdocs. And research training programs aimed at international young scientists from around the world are available for pregraduate, PhD and MD/PhD students within these new centers. Finally, new cross-disciplinary bachelor undergraduate programs are underway for the first time this fall, one example is Biomedicine.

This investment isn't limited to within academia. Since our Øresundsregion is furnished with several large pharmaceutical and many smaller biotech companies, they are now negotiating "industry-professorships", which will make it possible for researchers to stay in academia and but at the same time be working directly in an industrial setting. These positions will be for 5 years.

The University's Tech Transfer Unit, established within the Faculty in 2003, is also taking a more active role. Besides identifying, protecting and commercializing innovations that emerge from the university, the Unit also organises a number of meeting forums for strategic and concrete interactions with industrial partners and their organizations.

The Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Copenhagen is a big Faculty in a small country. It employs approximately 1900, including full-time and part-time academic staff as well as technical personnel. The Faculty is proud to have about 4,000 pregraduate students and more than 500 PhD students enrolled. The Faculty educates medical doctors, dentists, human biologists, masters and candidates of public health and international health. Together with the Science Faculty educations in nanotechnology with a strong emphasis on nanomedicine are offered and with the Danish Technical University medico-engineers are being educated.

To let basic science prevail, to recruit and keep the best students and researchers, to let high quality entrepreneurship bloom, the Faculty is taking strong act with this new multitasking programme. They ensure centripedal research governance. Hence the new positions and programmes. therefore: Make Copenhagen your choice. The leadership listens to your voice.
