Genetics and Genomics of Infectious Diseases

This meeting is the first in a series of meetings organized jointly by the American Society of Human Genetics (ASHG), the Human Genome Organisation (HUGO) and Nature Publishing Group. The goal of the series of meetings is to broaden the scope and application of genetics and genomics to diverse communities beyond geneticists, and in different global locations.

Conference Organizers

The American Society of Human Genetics

The American Society of Human Genetics (ASHG), founded in 1948, is the primary professional membership organization for human geneticists in North America. Members include researchers, academicians, clinicians, laboratory practice professionals, genetic counselors, nurses and others involved in human genetics. The principal objectives of ASHG are to bring together investigators in the many areas of endeavor that involve human genetics, and to encourage and integrate their efforts by providing a forum for sharing research findings. This is accomplished primarily through the Society's annual meeting and its official monthly publication, The American Journal of Human Genetics. In keeping with its focus on education, ASHG strives to inform health professionals, legislators, health policy makers and the general public about all aspects of human genetics. The Society actively encourages the participation and contributions of young scientists to ensure ongoing growth and progress in the field.

The Human Genome Organisation

The Human Genome Organisation (HUGO), established in 1989, is the international organisation of scientists involved in human genetics. Its mission is to promote international collaborative effort to study the human genome and the issues raised by that study. HUGO has had noteworthy successes in some of the less glamorous, but nonetheless vital, aspects of the human genome project.

HUGO constantly seeks new ways of enabling international co-operation and building on the unique infrastructure already in place via its global membership. Collaborations are fostered by HUGO at its the annual HGM meetings.

Since the end of 2007, HUGO has been based in Singapore. Under the Presidency of Professor Edison Liu, is entering a new and exciting phase of its development, reflecting the growth and increasing drive in all aspects of genomics that is coming from South-East Asia.
