QinetiQ is a leading international technology company providing research, technical advice, technology solutions and services to customers in core markets of defence and security. QinetiQ is increasingly working to transfer our expertise and capabilities into adjacent markets such as energy and environment. With over 14,000 employees worldwide, QinetiQ ensures they have outstanding people, facilities and technologies available to provide innovative, high-value solutions to customers' problems.
At its facility at Malvern in the UK, QinetiQ undertakes research into and develops products from compound semiconductor materials including the wide band-gap material Gallium Nitride (GaN) for high power electronics and high brightness LEDs into addition to narrow band-gap materials based around indium antimonide (InSb) and its derivatives for high speed transistors and solid state infra-red sources.
Also utilising InSb based materials is the Quantum-coherent devices research programme which has the key objective of developing the theory and building blocks to create a route to early adoption of the technology. Work on ballistic transport single electron devices and single photon emitters coupled with spin related phenomena have seen recent advances that exploit the unique advantages of this material system.
Supporting the deep scientific expertise at QinetiQ are semiconductor growth and processing facilities plus a comprehensive advanced analysis suite that quickly enables ideas to be turned into devices. These include Metal Organic Vapour Phase Epitaxy (MOVPE) and Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) growth capabilities plus device fabrication facilities located in a 200m2 clean room and equipped with a full range of semiconductor processing techniques.
