Today, more than ever, the public and policymakers are looking to the scientific community to play a leading role in addressing critical global problems related to energy, the environment, food security and sustainable development. The challenges we face are more numerous, more urgent and more complex than ever before. Solutions, as a result, will require the collective expertise of scientists from across the globe. A World of Science in the Developing World reflects the insights of eminent scientists who are either members of TWAS, the academy of sciences for the developing world, or who have been closely associated with the academy. The collection is being published on the occasion of the twenty-fith anniversary of TWAS, which has been a leading voice for scientific capacity building and excellence in the South. It is being funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), the Wellcome Trust and the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS).
