We are pleased to support this special Nature Neuropathic Pain Collection. Chronic pain is a common and debilitating condition that is often very difficult to treat adequately. Although at Pfizer we are proud to have brought to clinical use many important analgesic agents (including pregabalin {Lyrica}, celecoxib {Celebrex} and eletriptan {Relpax}), we also recognize that much more progress is necessary to improve pain therapeutics and our researchers are driven to fill this urgent need. We are continuing our efforts to develop new analgesic agents based on scientific research and drug discovery across four major research sites located in Japan, UK and USA, and with clinical development across the globe. New advances in our understanding of pain mechanisms and pathophysiology of various painful conditions (as illustrated in this supplement for neuropathic pain) are key to the development of new pharmacological approaches, but that is just the start. We need to selectively target these mechanisms, and efficiently test the potential of new approaches in the clinic. The development of new therapeutic options for pain requires close collaboration between the research-based pharmaceutical industry, academia, clinicians and regulators. If you believe that Pfizer could be an important partner in the progress of an idea or potential new product for pain, please contact us at pfizer.licensing@pfizer.com or strategicalliances@pfizer.com. We hope this web focus of scientific papers will stimulate further ideas and new research that could play a role in the eventual development of new treatments for pain.
