The Graphical Interface
by Sharon Kardia

Origin

From Microcal
Version 5.0 for Windows 95 and NT

This is a basic spreadsheet-style, technical graphics and data analysis software package, which falls into the category of small packages for the purpose of this review. Its design features the ability to open and use Microsoft Excel workbooks.

UNIQUE GRAPHICS FEATURES: There are no unique graphics options in Orgin.

STRENGTHS: Origin has good customizing features for the graphics it produces. It also has a nice graphical layering capability, which allows users to place related graphs or graphs of enlarged sections of the main plot being displayed. This feature allows information at different scales to be viewed simultaneously.

WEAKNESSES: Origin is very limited. It is not really set up for extensive statistical and graphical analysis of data.

LIKELY USERS: Origin is for people who need a package for basic analyses and basic graphics. Like Excel, it is good for simple graphical plots – better in some respects, worse in others, but with basically the same level of sophistication.
