Experimental
infections of cynomolgus macaques with the newly discovered SARS-associated coronavirus
(SCV) confirm beyond reasonable doubt that it is indeed the aetiological agent
of SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome). This does not exclude the possibility
that other respiratory pathogens, including human metapneumovirus and Chlamydia
pneumoniae, may have exacerbated the disease in some cases. But the agents
are not found consistently in SARS patients, and do not usually cause the lesions
associated with SARS.
