Immune diseases: TALL story

TALL-1, a member of the tumour necrosis factor (TNF) family, plays an important role in the immune response by costimulating B lymphocyte proliferation. It is the subject of intense research and patents are being sought relating to the use of TALL-1 (also known as BAFF or BlyS) to treat inflammatory and immune-related diseases including lupus and cancer. The crystal structure of the functional, soluble component of the molecule, sTALL-1, in complexes with two of its receptors, is now reported. The structure reveals a mode of binding very different to that seen in other TNF–receptor complexes.
