Paleontology: A Lower Cretaceous world

The rate of discovery of fossils in the Yixian and Jiufotang rock formations in China's Liaoning province is outstripping the rate of description and publication. Already these rocks — known collectively as the Jehol Group — have yielded important insights into the evolution of birds, angiosperms and mammals. Zhou et al. review the work published so far, including dating, palaeobotany and geological setting, to provide a picture of the flora and fauna of this important Lower Cretaceous ecosystem.
