Gene therapy: Pause for thought

A young boy cured of severe combined immune deficiency (SCID) by gene therapy has developed a leukaemia-like condition almost certainly caused by the very treatment that cured him. The hunt is on to discover the intrinsic risks of current methods of gene transfer — and to develop new methods that minimize the risks.
