Palaeontology: Keeping track

The discovery of 50 distinct bird-like fossil footprints from the Late Triassic raises some interesting questions. If they were made by birds, they are some 55 million years older than the earliest known body fossils of birds. And if not made by birds, they represent a previously unknown group of animals, possibly small theropods. Either way, plenty of controversy for palaeontologists.
