The complete genome sequences of two variants of Salmonella enterica are published this week. Serovar Typhi (or S. typhi) is the cause of typhoid fever and serovar Typhimurium LT2 (S. typhimurium) can lead to human gastroenteritis. Comparisons of these sequences with each other and with E. coli reveal details of plasmids involved in multidrug resistance and a pathogenicity plasmid remarkably like one in the plague pathogen, Yersinia pestis.
