Plant biology: Arabidopsis thaliana genome sequenced

A major milestone in biology is achieved this week, the sequencing and analysis of the genome of Arabidopsis thaliana, the 'model' plant for research. Members of the Arabidopsis Genome Initiative present the sequences of its remaining three chromosomes , and an overview of the annotation and analysis of the whole genome . A News and Views discusses the sequence in relation to plant evolution and agriculture, while a News Feature investigates other plant genome initiatives. All these items plus supporting material and an A. thaliana slide show are freely available from Nature's Genome Gateway at www.nature.com/genomics.

Now for the hard ones
DAVID ADAM
Arabidopsis was an obvious choice for the first plant genome project, but it will never feed the world. David Adam reports on efforts to harvest the genomes of rice and other important crop plants.
