The earliest microscopes shed light on a once-invisible world. But, Patricia Fara explains, microscopists were uncertain about how well the images reflected reality — just as they are today.

In January 1665, Samuel Pepys followed up an afternoon with a prostitute by dining with the President of the Royal Society. On his way home, he called in at his bookseller and ordered an advance copy of Robert Hooke's book of the microscope.
