Biochemistry: Radicals by reduction

Many enzymes convert their substrates into organic radicals to allow challenging reactions to occur. A microbial enzyme does so by simple electron transfer, casting fresh light on enzyme evolution.

The harmful effects of free radicals have been widely publicized over the past two decades. As a result, pharmacists are now well stocked with vitamins and nutritional supplements purported to combat the damage caused by these chemical bogeymen.
