Using seismic waves to image Earth's internal structure

Barbara Romanowicz1

Seismic waves generated in Earth's interior provide images that help us to better understand the pattern of mantle convection that drives plate motions.

Forty years after the discovery of seafloor spreading and the acceptance of the theory of plate tectonics, important gaps remain in our understanding of the pattern of convection that drives the motions of the plates, leading to earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanic eruptions. There are still many heated debates.
