Abstract
Complex toxin molecules are the ultimate challenge for organic chemists — even successful syntheses often involve an impractical number of steps. A biologically inspired reaction might simplify things.
Nature creates many complex organic molecules, but some of the most spectacular are the brevetoxins and ciguatoxins produced by marine microorganisms1. Brevetoxins are the toxic component of dramatic natural phenomena known as red tides (Fig. 1
