Shear stress tremors
A close examination of seismic data from the Denali earthquake of November 2002, which triggered seismicity across much of western North America, has revealed non-volcanic tremor triggered by the passage of surface waves across the northern Cascadia subduction zone. Previously fluid flow had been thought to be associated with such tremor, but the new work demonstrates that tremor can be triggered by shear stress at the plate interface.
