Biochemistry: Uncharted route for antibiotics

In their battle for survival, soil microorganisms produce a vast arsenal of toxic molecules. One such toxin contains a unique sequence of atoms, and its biosynthesis includes some unexpected steps.

Many commercially available antibiotics are products of soil bacteria that belong to the genus Streptomyces, or are modified versions of those products. They include several that are vital to medicine, such as vancomycin, rifampicin and clavulanic acid.
