The standard model has been well tested up to around the 100-GeV mass scale. The LHC will test beyond this, to the crucial 1,000-GeV level, the TeV scale, at which hints of new physics, such as supersymmetry and extra dimensions, may emerge. String theory or grand unified theories (GUTs) inhabit much higher energy scales, approaching 1019 GeV, which is called the Planck scale.
