California smoking
On 1 July, smoking becomes illegal in enclosed public places in England. Bans of various degrees of rigour are already in place across Europe, but it was California that led the way a decade ago. California resident Kris Novak reports on the mixed messages that epidemiologists are getting from the Californian experience. But one message remains unmixed: it is the actual smokers who are killing themselves, and concern about passive smoking should not obscure that fact.
