It is rare for a German university to appear in worldwide top 50 lists despite the nation's high profile in manufacturing and engineering, and despite spending more than France and the United Kingdom on research. Overdue reform was perhaps postponed by reunification, but in the past few years schemes such as the Excellence Initiative are beginning to bear fruit. Are things about to change?
